So I am having a few problems with Noah's sleeping arrangement. I have this constant back and forth feeling on the whole crib bumper issue. I get concerned that he may roll into it and not be able to breathe (yes I am that type of person!!), so my answer to that dilemma was to put the crib bumper on the outside of the crib. Which worked beautifully! It caught all of the paci's that were about to fall out (with a little help from two chubby little hands), it was a wonderful 'view' blocker for my curious son's eyes, and well it just seemed to work. Until he woke up the other day with a slate indented face. I guess he had fallen asleep with his face up against the slates and when he woke up it had a nice red slate mark from the tip of his chin to his forehead. I cringed. Then put the bumper in the crib. Then late last night (midnight to be exact) I lay there wondering if it should be in the crib, maybe he would get all scrunched up against it (I am sure you can tell where my thoughts were going..) So I took it out, okay Kelly took it out, and I slept better for it.

I don't know! I never took the bumper out of my girls cribs. The only reason I didn't is because I did hear about the dangers of it until after they were too old. The only thing I heard about was that they could use to it climb out. I think once he starts moving around a lot more it shouldn't be a problem.
I really don't think that the smothering thing is an issue when they can move around and lift their heads as Noah can. My other thought is I guess a dent in the head that doesn't seem to bother him is better than you worrying about the bumper being in the crib and losing sleep. This coming from an overly NOT concerned mom, to a fault :).
As Melissa said, the big danger I've always heard about bumpers is that the baby can use them to climb out. My doctor has always advised me of when to take the bumper off for that reason (I don't think Noah is there yet). I think you are probably fine either way.
I've worried about the whole suffucation thing too. But as Amy said usually the risks of that is significantly reduced once they can move around and lift their head, etc. I took the bumper out when I thought Eli could use it for leverage to get out but that only lasted a few days and I put it back on. Grant has had the bumper in since birth. Both boys turn their faces into it and its been fine. I guess you have to figure out what you want to do. Sorry, that wasn't much help.
Oh, one thing I meant to add is that I think One Step Ahead has mesh/breathable crib bumpers that you could put on the inside.
Parker still sleeps with his VERY puffy bumper - like a body pillow - he literally "spoons" the thing. How's that for opposite opinion?? I don't think they can suffocate once they can move their head. My doctor said after 6 months they can even sleep on their bellies because they are in control enough to move around if they don't think they can breathe. Bottom line .. whatever lets YOU get some sleep at night :)
Heidi, thanks for asking this question! I was just wondering the same thing so I'm benefiting from the advice. :-)
